Abstract

The voltmeter is a modified slide-back sensing circuit. The delay through the feedback loop in one direction is correlated to the delay through that feedback loop in the other direction. Thus the speed with which an equilibrium DC bias level is found is increased without increasing the amplitude of oscillations about that bias level.

The voltmeter is a modified slide-back sensing circuit. The delay through the feedback loop in one direction is correlated to the delay through that feedback loop in the other direction. Thus the speed with which an equilibrium DC bias level is found is increased without increasing the amplitude of oscillations about that bias level.

When input signal Vin fires tunnel diode TD, a high voltage appears at the input of differential amplifier 2. This is inverted at the output of amplifier 2 so as to forward bias diode D1 between it and integrator 3. This presents low impedance to integrator 3, which creates a faster loop response. and therefore the bias upon TD decreases fairly rapidly.

When TD is reset by a pulse from reset generator 4, the input to amplifier 2 is low and its output high to reverse bias diode D1. This presents a high impedance discharge path for the timing capacitor CT of integrator 3, which results in a slow increase in the restoration of bias to TD. With the bias to TD increasing slowly in this manner, when TD is set, the DC level is reached in less time without any increase in ripple.
