Abstract

This method of design assumes the designation of a number of functional units called facilities of the computer whose control is to be designed. The function of the control is to effect the sequencing and conditional branching of the operations of these facilities in accordance with the instructions of the computer. These sequencings and branchings are comprehensively described by a sequence chart. The latter consists, for each instruction or set of instructions, of a timed directed linear graph. On each horizontal line segment of the sequence chart are written the names of the operations to be performed at the time associated with this line. The immediate conditions necessary for their performance are written to the left of this line.

It is also necessary that a chain of a prior complex of conditions be satisfied so as to have arrived at this position in the sequence chart. Upon execution of the operations associated with this line, there is arrival at the terminal node of this line in the sequence chart. Their Boolean expressions are prescribed for the immediate conditions for execution of the next operations or branchings to other positions in the sequence chart.
