Stable Torque Limiting Clutch

In this stable torque-limiting clutch, coupling and control are automatic through flat, resilient coupling band 5. Input energy on drive belt 1 rotates pulley and drum 2 which is journaled on shaft 3. Output gear 4, also journaled on shaft 3, is driven by drum 2 through coupling 5.

Coupling 5 nests inside drum 2 and is driven by friction between surfaces 2a and 5a. Some lubricant material can be applied between surfaces 2a and 5a sufficient to reduce wear and nonlinear friction conditions. Output gear 4 is driven by finger 4a engaging coupling 5 at loop 5b.

Coupling 5 is expanded by its natural resilience and by mutual pushing of juxtaposed tips of tangs 5c and 5d. The latter are selected and dimensioned to provide forces yielding equal radial pressure toward drum 2 all around coupling
5. Torque transfer to gear 4 remains coiistant over a wide range of input-output velocity differences. Slipping automatically occurs when the torque is above a pre-established limit. Self-adjustment for wear is automatic since coupling 5 simply expands as required.
