Variable Left Margin With Counter Control

The apparatus includes an up-down counter for establishing any of a number of available left margin locations by appropriate detection of count status.

Printer 1, at A, includes print head 2 that is rotated and tilted by selection block 3 to select characters for printing under control of character keys 4. Following a selection, head 2 is actuated against document 5 to print by movement of rocker 6 mounted in carrier 7. The latter moves to the right for escapement and tabbing by tension on cord 8 from mainspring 9. Carrier 7 moves to the left for backspacing and carrier return by tension on cord 10 from shaft 11. Tab rack 12 with tab stops, such as 13, 14, and 15, sets up several left margins and other indentation or tab levels.

A tap operation occurs when tab key 16 is depressed. Carrier return is initiated by key 17 that sets reverse latch 18 and carrier latch 22. Both kinds of operations are controlled by up-down counter 19 through logic 20 as at B. The logic makes use of indications from sensor 21 that senses set tab stops. Sensor 21 can have several forms. These include electrical contacts, or a horseshoe magnet with coil of wire to give an impulse when low-reluctance iron path is sensed, or a horseshoe-shaped iron member with coil of wire, an oscillator to drive coil, and sensing of increased inductance due to proximity of a stop.

The location of the left margin for any paragraph is determined by the actual tab oper...
