Abstract

Web W moves in either direction at a fixed velocity over surface S. Near each end of S, a pair of grooves 13 and 14 is formed which connect respectively to inner plenums 12. Pipes 16 each include pneumatic resistance RL which is connected to common vacuum source P3. Also each pipe 16 is connected through a respective shunt pneumatic resistance Rv to pressure P1 which is greater than pressure P3. P1 can be atmospheric pressure. By independent adjustment of the respective shunt resistances Rv, the spacing of web W from surface S is maintained at the same value for both directions of relative movement between W and S.
