The character generator consists of a group of high-speed, high-intensity lamps associated with character masks. A common lens and object plane are used. The desired image is selected by energizing the appropriate lamp and projecting that image through a uniquely assembled compound coherent fiber bundle.

The upper drawing shows the entire system. Object plane 1 receives an image through lens 2 and unique fiber bundle 3 and its tributaries 4A...4D. Four tributaries are shown for purposes of illustration. Character masks 5A...5D each present an effective image to its associated tributary 4 as the respective lamps 6A...6D are energized. The fibers from each tributary 4 are evenly spread out and interspaced in bundle 3 so that lens 2 always sees a centered image.

The fibers from each tributary 4 diverge at the composite bundle end so that each fiber becomes a unit of one element as in the lower drawing. The smallest oriented group of fibers on the surface of bundle 3 is denominated an element. Each element contains one and only one fiber from each tributary 4. One element is circled by heavy dotted lines in the lower drawing. The number of fibers in each element is equal to the number of tributary bundles. The sum of all the elements composes the entire operative surface facing lens 2.
