Abstract

The system supplies binary data inputs to magnetic ink character recognition systems. In such systems, a magnetic reading head generates signals as the result of relative scanning motion between the head and magnetic characters on a document. These signals are amplified and shaped and then supplied to a character recognition system . The latter provides an output indicative of the character scanned. Previously, various types of operating programs in such machines are controlled by manually setting switches to control the internal processing of information.

The system supplies binary data inputs to magnetic ink character recognition systems. In such systems, a magnetic reading head generates signals as the result of relative scanning motion between the head and magnetic characters on a document. These signals are amplified and shaped and then supplied to a character recognition system . The latter provides an output indicative of the character scanned. Previously, various types of operating programs in such machines are controlled by manually setting switches to control the internal processing of information.

This arrangement uses binary coded positions on a document such as a data card 3, having a plurality of binary coded positions 5. The latter are created either by depositing magnetic material at the desired locations or by removing material from locations where no magnetic response is desired. Such removal is by punching holes in a card having a strip of magnetizable ink printed on it in the card row where the punching is to occur.

Such documents are then passed by reading head 7 in the magnetic ink character reader. The binary coded impulses are amplified and shaped by amplifier and shaper 9, decoded by decoder 11 and utilized to govern machine program control 13. The same reading head 7 and circuits 9 are also used during the regular operation of the machine to supply signals derived from scanning magnetized characters to character recognition system 15.
