This magneto-optic readout apparatus has the advantage of avoiding relative motion and, therefore, wear between magneto-optic transducer 1 and flexible information bearing magnetic recording media 2.

Positioning device 3 consists of roller 4 running in contact with media 2 and carried on support device 5 including slotted leg 6. Roller 4 and leg 6 are rigidly interconnected and connected to solenoid actuator 7.

To place media 2 into contact with transducer 1, actuator 7 is activated to urge roller 4 and leg 6 to the left. This brings media 2 into intimate contact with transducer 1 without causing relative horizontal motion between them. Readout is then accomplished by passing light into transducer 1 and detecting its condition upon reflection.

After readout is accomplished, media 2 is removed from contact with transducer 1 by actuating the positioning device to the right. Leg 6 thus serves to lift and peel media 2 from the transducer 1 surface.

In order to avoid frictional contact between the bearing surface of leg 6 and the recording surface of media 2, the surface of the slot is either highly polished or coated with a low friction material such as polytetrafluoroethylene. Alternatively, a roller can be substituted for the lower portion of leg 6.
