The device moves filters and other optical components with angular harmonic motion without any axial movement.

The optical filter or other optical component 1 is fixed to rotor 2 which is suspended by three or more half-turn springs 3. The latter restrain rotor 2 from moving in an axial direction. Rotor 2 is free to rotate within limits in the plane of suspension as indicated by arrow W. Rotor 2 is fixed to armature 4 with three or more spring systems 5. The latter allow axial movement between rotor 2 and armature 4 but do not introduce any rotational movement. Armature 4 is suspended by three or more bar springs 6 such that when armature 4 is attracted by the magnetic field produced by electromagnet 7, armature 4 rotates as it moves towards stator 8. As armature 4 moves, it transfers the rotational motion to rotor 2 by springs 5. However, rotor 2 does not move axially because it is restrained in that direction by springs 3.

The electrical signal applied to electromagnet 7 is such that the desired motion is obtained.

For smoother and better control of the operation, a double-acting system made up of a second armature, stator, and spring system can be added to the front of rotor 2.

The device is shown as a simplified assembly. However, if the length of the device is critical, it is possible to fold the armature and stator system back on the outside of the rotor, thereby reducing the optical path length.
