Magnetic or nonmagnetic pins can be efficiently inserted in receiving holes by a vibrating loader formed with multiple supply compartments.

Fin loader 1 has cylindrical supply compartments 2 formed in it which are parallel to and aligned with receiving holes 3 of pin carrier 4. Compartments 2 are slightly deeper than the length of a pin 5. Sloping sides 6 urge loose pins toward compartments 2. Loader 1 is provided with flanges which fit over carrier 4.

Carrier 4 is formed of upper and lower carriers 4a and 4b with corresponding holes 3 aligned. Channel 8 is cut in the bottom of carrier 4b enabling vacuum to be applied to all holes 3 in the carriers. Channel 8 is sufficiently wide to expose portions of holes 4b. Recess 9 is also cut in carrier 4b in which pin stop plate 10 is positioned. Carriers 4a and 4b are removably mounted on manifold block 11 which has channel 12 in it connected by duct 13 to a vacuum source. Plate 10 has perforations 14 which allow the vacuum to be applied to exposed holes 3 in channel 8.

In operation, a quantity of loose pins 5 is dropped in the top of loader 1 and a vibrator, built into the loader, is energized. Compartments 2 of 1 are slightly larger in diameter than half the pin length so that the motion of loader 1 causes pins 5 to fall into compartments 2 in a substantially upright position.
