Bridge Connector

When two circuit boards are arranged in a common plane, coaxial cable arrangements for connecting the boards require appreciable space. With this bridge connector, the connection is made with less space and fewer parts.

Both circuit boards 11 and 13 are recessed at 15 and 17 to expose the end parts of internal signal lines 19. A T-shaped plug 21 having an internal signal line 23 fits between the ends of the boards so that its exposed signal line rests on part of the two exposed board signal lines which are pre-tinned. A low temperature solder iron contacts the remainders of the exposed board signal lines so that solder reflow connects the plug signal line to the board signal lines.

Copper-clad fillers 25 fill the residual board recesses. Each board has top and bottom ground planes 27 and 29. The plug is similarly copper-clad at 31 and
33. Two metal plate members 35 and 37 encase the ends of the boards and the plug and provide bridging at the gaps of the ground planes. With this ground- signal connection, the proper impedance is maintained.
