Abstract

The number of a data group in group counter 10 sets up punch unit 11 for entering perforations into cards 12. A single card is generated for each group containing data. For example, a data document 13 may have 10 groups but with data in only groups 2, 5 and 7. Under this condition three cards numbered 2, 5 and 7 are punched. This requires counter 10 to be advanced in a particular manner.

Prior to processing source documents, control document 14 having an end- of-group EOG data indication in the last word of each group is read. The EOG's are entered into storage, such as delay line 2. The counter advance cycle starts after one source document has been read and a line mark signal indicating the beginning of delay line 1 is available. If at least one group contains data, punch start latch 15 is set. With 15 set, and a line mark signal available, the input conditions to And 16 are satisfied and the start group count latch 17 is set. The set output of 17 is applied to And 18.
