Document Aligner

A freely swinging roll in conjunction with a friction roll in a document feed path provides a reliable asynchronous document aligner.

Document 1 is driven to the left between guide plates 2 and 3 by feed rolls 4 and 5. The leading edge 6 of document 1 moves swinging roll 7 and inverted U- shaped hanger 8 clockwise about pivot 9. The weight of the hanger tends to return roll 7 to the position shown.

After the trailing edge of document 1 leaves feed rolls 4 and 5, roll 7 urges document 1 against skewed lower reverse roll 10. Roll 10 drives document 1 both rearwardly and transversely against edge aligning surfaces, not shown, adjacent the trailing edge and side of the document for accurate alignment. Hanger 8 engages upper guide plate 2 which limits roll 7 from moving back past center. The mounting of roll 7 permits easy forward motion of the document 1 during subsequent feeding.
