Abstract

Wear performance of cobalt-phosphorus alloy, deposited by chemical reduction from baths of the cobalt cation-hypophosphite anion type is improved by chemical post treatment. Treatment of the plated material with an aqueous solution of hypophosphite anion results in improved wear characteristics for the plated material. More specifically, a solution of sodium hypophosphite mono-hydrate NaH(2)PO(2). H(2)O having a concentration of 50 g/l at a temperature of 175 degrees F. improves the wear characteristics of the plated material after about 30 seconds of immersion. The hypophosphite anion treatment is followed by rinsing in water and drying. Poor wearing material is transformed into extremely good wearing material by using this chemical post treatment.
