Abstract

Magnetic properties of cobalt-phosphorus, deposited by chemical reduction from baths of the cobalt cation-hypophosphite anion type are dependent over a broad range upon the cobalt cation concentration of the plating bath. The drawing indicates that, for varying lengths of plating time from 1 to 4 minutes coercivity H(c) depends upon the cobalt cation concentration of the plating bath. The coercivity increases with decreasing cobalt cation concentration.

The saturation coercivity H(sr) and the remanent magnetic moment M(r) are also found to increase with decreasing cobalt cation concentration. Previously for this type of cobalt-phosphorus alloy, remanent magnetic moment decreases as coercivity increases. The bath formulation utilized is as follows: CoSo(4) . 7H(2)O 30, 35, 45, 50 g/l NaH(2)PO(2) . H(2)O 20 g/l (NH(4))(2)SO(4) 66 g/l Na(3)C(6)H(5)O(7) . 2H(2)O 35 g/l NH(4)OH(28% aqueous solution) 37.5 ml/l pH at 76 degrees C 8.3.
