Automatic Phasing of Synchronous Motors

The motors M of any of several remote synchronous devices e are to be maintained in synchronism with the motor of master device a. The master motor is provided with controls c. These include an emitter producing for example, twelve pulses per revolution for a 60 cycle, 10 revolution per second motor and a second emitter producing one pulse per revolution.

The twelve pulse emitter is used to drive a binary counter producing an output pulse every 11/12 of a revolution. The single pulse emitter is used to block one of the 11/12 revolution pulses. The other pulses are fed to the remote locations over conductors d where the motor M drives an emitter 10. The latter has a single segment which spans a pair of brushes 11 and 12. These are connected to a release winding W of switch S connecting the motor M to an AC source and normally held latched by flux from permanent magnet P. Emitter 10 has a cam surface 14 for camming the switch to reclose it.

So long as the motor M is synchronized with the motor of the master the segment bridges brushes 11 and 12 when there is no pulse being transmitted. Should motor M get out of step or be out of step as during starting the segment spans brushes 11 and 12 while pulses are occurring from c. Switch S is opened to cause M to slip a pole then cammed closed until the next pulse, in succession, until synchronism is achieved.
