Record data embossments can be reliably and efficiently read by detecting pressure levels of fluid sensing streams directed against the record.

Embossed record 1, such as a plastic badge or card is moved along bedplate 2 by flexible driving roll 3. Bedplate 2 is provided with manifold 4 to which pressurized fluid is supplied. Sensing channels 5 each having a restriction 6, direct fluid from manifold 4 through apertures 7 in bedplate 2 at a location over which the embossed area of record 1 passes. Restrictions 6 conserve pressure. Spaced adjacent each aperture 7 at a distance less than an embossment width are grooves 8 in bedplate 2 serving as vents to the atmosphere.

Each channel 5 has a tap 9 to which pressure-sensitive transducers can be connected.

In operation, the passage of a flat record portion blocks fluid flow from apertures 7 so that the pressure in taps 9 is high, substantially equal to manifold pressure. Whenever an embossment 10 arrives, fluid from the coinciding aperture 7 flows into the embossment and to atmosphere through an adjacent groove. This reduces the tap pressure to approximately atmospheric. The low pressure can thus indicate a data bit. Record data areas can be defined by generating and sensing timing pulses concurrently with the passage of only record data areas. The sensing principle can be extended to the recognition of embossed characters.
