Abstract

The device detects infrared radiation by utilizing the infrared radiation to heat the surface of an element. The heating caused by the infrared radiation causes expansion and hence distortion, thus detecting the presence of infrared radiation. The infrared radiation is incident on parabolic, aluminized mirror 10. The latter reflects the radiation to blackened mirror 14. The radiation incident upon mirror 14 deforms its surface. The deformation is due to the thermal expansion of the surface of mirror 14. Knife-edge 16 is provided so that a Leon Foucault test can be performed to determine the quality of the surface of mirror 14, thus detecting any incident infrared radiation.

Other tests such as phase-contrast tests can likewise be used to detect any deformities on the surface of mirror 14 due to thermal expansion caused by infrared radiation.
