Abstract

This magnetic storage device is of the type in which the elemental magnetizable units are formed by pairs of thin-film elements 2 and 3. Pairs of thin-film elements are located at each intersection or orthogonally arranged sets of word conductors 4 and bit conductors 5. The drawing shows a single pair of film elements and the associated bit and word conductors and other word conductors. The thin-film elements are constructed to have an easy axis of magnetization in the direction of excitation by the bit conductor. They have a hard magnetic axis in the direction of excitation by the word conductor. The word and bit conductors are energized together for magnetizing the film elements along a selected direction of the easy axis for storing binary values.

They have a hard magnetic axis in the direction of excitation by the word conductor. The word and bit conductors are energized together for magnetizing the film elements along a selected direction of the easy axis for storing binary values. For reading, the word conductor is energized to switch the magnetization into the hard direction.

The voltage associated with this magnetization change appears in the bit conductor which is connected to suitable detection circuitry.

The structure is formed in layers with insulation 6 suitably formed between the conductors and the magnetic elements. Bit conductor 5 is positioned between the two film elements 2 and 3 so that the latter form a nearly closed magnetic path about the bit conductor. The circuit of the bit conductor is completed through ground plane 7. This is stranded to reduce eddy currents and to prevent it from conducting word current.
