Magnetic Tape Cartridge

Magnetic tape cartridge 10 is usable with tape drive 11 having cradle 12 fitted with drive elements 13, tape head 14, base stop 15, and back-stop 16. Cartridge 10 encloses two tape reels 17 carrying tape 18 which passes over two idlers 19 and through recessed handle 20. The latter has stationary plate 21 which cooperates with handle portion 22, of hinged cover 23, to form a chamber through which tape 18 passes when cover 23 is closed.

Cartridge 10 is loaded manually by placing its bottom edge in cradle 12 against base stop 15 and tilting cartridge 10 forwardly until it seats in cradle 12. Cover 23 is opened as cartridge 10 is tilted forwardly, to expose tape 18 and allow it to move between the drive elements and adjacent to head 14 as cartridge 10 seats. When cartridge 10 is seated, cover 23 rests on backstop 16. When cartridge 10 is unloaded, cover 23 is closed to seat tape 18 within cartridge 10.

Cover 23 carries label 24 that is readable when cartridge 10 is stored or carried or when it is loaded in drive 11.
