Multilayer Film Keeper

This type of keeper construction provides efficient flux closure for a magnetic storage film or film pair while occupying only a small fraction of the space that would be occupied by a ferrite keeper.

The keeper shown is composed of alternate thin layers of high-permeability magnetic film, such as permalloy, and a suitable dielectric material that can be deposited in thin layers, such as silicon monoxide. This layered structure is built to the depth necessary for effecting the desired flux closure. The desired magnetic properties can be controlled by suitable choices of materials, additives and layer thicknesses.

This keeper not only occupies less space than a ferrite keeper, but it also enables the keeper to be more closely and uniformly spaced from the storage film by suitably controlling the thickness of the first insulating layer. The interleaved dielectric layers and the thinness of the magnetic layers minimize the eddy-current losses in the keeper. The keeper can be isotropic or anisotropic as preferred.
