The cam-operated mechanism permits parallel feeding and serial processing of documents. The mechanism uses a single plate for registering, stacking and off-setting stacked documents.

In A document 1 is fed from the bottom of a pack by a pair of feed knives 2 mounted on a pair of parallel four-bar linkages. Each linkage includes link 3 movable on pivot shaft 4, link 5 pivoted on shaft 6, and reciprocating link 7 connected to links 3, 5 on which feed knives 2 are supported. Corresponding links in the two linkages can be opposite legs of a single U-shaped member.

Cam shaft 8, when clutched, rotates cam 9 moving knives 2 toward the right to feed document 1 under throat block 10. As knives 2 move right, registering pawl 11 moves left and the document passes over the spring-biased pawl into the grip of rotating feed rolls 12. Continued rotation of shaft 8 causes knives 2 to return left and pawl 11 to move right. Cam 9 is timed so that pawl 11 engages the trailing edge of document 1 after it leaves the grip of rolls 12, holding the leading edge against an aligning surface. Shaft 8 is subsequently stopped for document 1 to be transported serially from the aligning station.

The serial processing mechanism is shown at B. During the forward motion of pawl 11 and, for a time, shaft 8 still rotates and moves cams 14 and 15 on it. Cam 14 holds bellcrank 16 with arm 17 at the extreme clockwise position on pivot 18. Arm 17 thus holds arm 19 in an extreme counterclockwise position on pivot 20. Bail 21 on arm 19 engages star wheel sensing arms 22 and roller support arm 23 to lift arms 22 and 23 above incrementing drive roller 24. After document 1 clears rolls 12 and is held by pawl 11, cam 15 engages follower 25 rocking plate 26 clockwise about pivot 27 on bellcrank 16. Since the bellcrank is held at the clockwise extreme, pivot 27 is high so that the top edge of plate 26 engages document 1 pushing it agains...
