Abstract

Commercial grade nitrobenzene is established in purification flask 10 under a nitrogen atmosphere. The nitrobenzene is passed through a molecular sieve, e.g., molecular sieve powder X13 obtained from the Linde Company. The molecular sieve powder is supported on a fine glass frit. A vacuum is pulled on tube 12 to aid the filtering process. Purified nitrobenzene, e.g., specific resistance of 4.92 x 10/10/ ohm-cm, is obtained from the commercial grade nitrobenzene initially introduced into the system by removal of the decomposition products and traces of sorbed water.

Purification of Nitrobenzene

In the procedure for obtaining the purified nitrobenzene, all glassware is initially thoroughly cleaned and dried. The molecular sieve powder is heat- treated in vacuum for twenty-four hours and, while hot, it is transferred to a nitrogen dry box where all operations take place.
