Abstract

Chlorendic anhydride cured epoxy systems are used in preparing circuit board prepregnants. The heat distortion temperature of the prepregnant is maximized by a judicious choice of a metal chelate catalyst such as vanadyl acetylacetonate, iron acetylacetonate and cobalt acetylacetonate, together with varying the chlorendic anhydride concentration in the epoxy system.

Chlorendic anhydride cured epoxy systems are used in preparing circuit board prepregnants. The heat distortion temperature of the prepregnant is maximized by a judicious choice of a metal chelate catalyst such as vanadyl acetylacetonate, iron acetylacetonate and cobalt acetylacetonate, together with varying the chlorendic anhydride concentration in the epoxy system.

The curing reaction occurs through the formation of ester and ether crosslinkages between the chlorendic anhydride and an epoxy resin. The ester and ether formation is accelerated to a given degree dependent upon the choice of metal chelate. The degree of crosslinking is also dependent upon the concentration of chlorendic anhydride. Since the heat distortion temperature of the prepregnant is dependent upon the degree of crosslinking, it is maximized by varying the concentration of the chlorendic anhydride in accordance with the choice of metal chelate catalyst.
