Pneumatic Digital To Analog Converter

A digital value composed of n digital inputs is converted into a single analog output value. This represents the weighted sum of the digital inputs.

Digital gates 1...n are opened at a Sample Time signal so that selected ones of input lines D1...Dn are operable to open pneumatic gates Gs1...Gsn. Those pneumatic gates opened permit pressurized supply fluid from source Ps to fill volumes V1...Vn corresponding to actuated input lines D1...Dn. The volumes each have capacities in accordance with digital values that they represent.

The Sample Time signal is terminated and a Convert Time signal then opens all convert gates Gc1...Gcn. Such openings allow the pressurized fluid in those filled volumes to seek equilibrium pressure Pc as the fluid disperses to all volumes V1...Vn and to load volume VL. The size of VL depends upon the driving capabilities required of the converter. The output pressure Pc is thus proportional to the weighted sum of input digits.
