Methoxy Substituted Benzenediazonium Fluoborates

A series of mono-, di- and trimethoxy benzenediazonium fluoborates are useful as a component in diazo film formulations.

These methoxy substituted benzenediazonium fluoborates are prepared by the following general procedure.

One mole of amine is dissolved or slurried in 4 moles of 6N hydrochloric acid, and cooled by stirring to 0 degrees C. To this is added dropwise, a solution of 1 mole of 5N sodium nitrate solution while maintaining a temperature of between 0- 5 degrees C. The resultant diazonium chloride solution is filtered and 1-1/2 moles of 48% fluoboric acid are added all at once. The solution is stirred until the diazonium fluoborate has formed a well defined crystalline salt. Then, the salt is filtered, washed with cold water, and recrystallized.
