Abstract

Tin-Lead fluoborate plating solutions, after a period of time, tend to discolor and precipitate solid material. In order to minimize such discoloration and precipitation, a small amount of 3-mercaptopropionic acid is added to the plating solution for stabilization. The improved stability of the tin-lead fluoborate plating solution containing this additive is attributed to the chelating action of this additive with tin (N). In this reaction, a soluble chelate is formed which prevents the hydrolysis and subsequent precipitation of unchelated tin (N). The composilysis and subsequent precipitation of unchelated tin (N). The composition of tin-lead plate obtained remains more constant. A more constant-composition plating solution results.
