Eccentric Cam Punching Mechanism

A punch mechanism employing a single cam for punching, interposer control, punch restore and incremental drive is shown.

The punch mechanism comprises eccentric cam 10 turning within stationary eccentric sleeve 12 secured to sliding yoke 14. Yoke 14 is driven downward as cam 10 rotates. Punch 16 is driven through card 18 if the associated interposer 20 is released to a cam-following position by control magnet 22. As can 10 continues to rotate, projection 24 of yoke 14 restores punch 16 and interposer 20 to the inoperative position. Interposer 20 is attached to cam follower 26. A part of follower 26 comprises the armature for control magnet 22 which is actuated to hold interposer 20 in the inoperative position until the start of another punch operation.

A pin 28 in the eccentric sleeve assembly is positioned for back and forth movement in a slot of the sliding yoke to rock an escape lever 30. The latter oscillates feed pawl 32 for advancing incremental feed ratchet 34. This is fixed to the shaft which drives feedroll 36 to advance card 18 past the punching position. An incremental drive control magnet can be positioned opposite the escape lever or feed pawl 32 to provide selective operation of the incremental drive by holding these levers in the retracted position when card 18 is not to be driven.
