Reed Switch Contact Block

This reed switch contact block operates by introducing shunt material which diverts the magnetic field of a magnet. The result is the control of a reed switch without interposing the shunt material between the magnet and the reed switch.

Shunt 11, made of ferromagnetic material, normally rests upon or is in close proximity to magnet 13. When in this position, shunt 11 diverts the magnetic field of magnet 13. Thus the latter is prevented from actuating magnetically responsive reed switch 15. When link 17 is moved to the left, shunt 11 pivots about fixed shaft 19. Shunt 11 moves to a position where it no longer prevents magnet 13 from actuating reed switch 15. The magnetic field of magnet 13 then causes the contacts of reed switch 15 to close.

Magnet 13 is embedded in plastic block 21 and reed switch 15 is mounted on circuit board 23. The latter is not permanently attached to plastic block 21 in order to facilitate servicing reed switch 15.
