This circuitry is for translating Hollerith punched card information into the Binary Coded Decimal BCD System.

Using the scanistor mode of operation, which is a solid state optical scanner producing pulses in response to light directed on it when sequentially scanned by a ramp voltage, a pulse is obtained when there is a hole punched in the card. The pulse is related in time to ramp generator 14 and clock 16.

Binary triggers BT are used to store the BCD information. Two scanistors 10 and 12 are arranged in parallel fashion. Scanner 10 detects zone punches. Scanner 12 detects numerical punches. Resistors R associated with scanistor 10 are of such a value that the 12, 11, and 0 punches are scanned simultaneously with respect to the 7, 8, and 9 punches. The result is that a maximum of three clock pulses is available to the A and B binary triggers.

When a zone punch is detected, trigger 18 is set and And 20 is conditioned to allow the clock 16 to pulse the B and A binary triggers. A 12 punch results in B and A outputs. An 11 punch yields only a B output. A 0 punch yields only an A output. There is no output from B or A where there is no zone punch.
