Document Stacker

Documents 10 of a wide range of sizes and weights are transported by cooperating belts 15 and 16. Documents 10 are then allowed to pass in free flight under spring 19 of stacker arm 20 to engage a resilient end plate 25. This is in the form of bristle brushes to form a stack of documents upon vertically movable platform 30.

Normally, lightweight documents do not reach the end plate 25 if the weight contributed by arm 20 is too heavy. Conversely, heavy documents rebound out of control if the weight of arm 20 is too light. To permit the weight of arm 20 to be light enough so that lightweight documents stack evenly, and heavier documents do not rebound out of control, beveled brush 31 is attached to one end of arm 20. Brush 31 has a low friction force resisting entry of documents and a high friction force resisting the rebound of documents from plate 25. Backing member 35 controls the splay of the bristles forming brush 31 and also functions as a safety stop.

While plate 25 can be formed from any resilient material the bristles provide substantial noise reduction and reduce damage to the documents.
