Abstract

With a single document 10 of thickness a between cooperating rollers 20 and 25, arm 30 moves from the home position a distance equal to Ya/X. With arm 30 in this position, light from 35 can pass through aperture 40 to impinge upon light sensitive element 45. Documents 10 having a minimum thickness of a and a maximum thickness of b do not move arm 30 to cover aperture 40 having a width Z.

When overlapped documents within the thickness range specified pass between rollers 20 and 25, arm 30 is moved to a position to cover 40 and prevent light from reaching 45. Absence of a signal from 45 is indicative of an overlapped document condition.

An advantage of this detector is that single documents of variable thickness within a predetermined range are not detected as double documents.
