Nondestructive Readout Thin Film Memory

This is a memory configuration with coupled thin magnetic films. It provides increased sense line data signal outputs from thicker film cells. It also allows reduced word drive currents in a line array. There results a high packing density of store locations.

The binary information 1 and 0 is represented by the two possible antiparallel states of both sandwich films. They adjoin both surfaces of a metal screen to allow nondestructive readout operation according to the eddy current brake mode. The read films and the store films are separated by an unslotted metal strip line. This is used both as eddy current screen and as center strip forming a part of a symmetrical triplate word drive line. Such runs in the direction of the easy axis of magnetization. The upper outer word strip is slotted. The lower outer word conductor is the metal ground plate.

The bit and sense lines running orthogonally to the word line lie in a common plane between the upper read films and the upper outer word strip. The space between the center word strip and the ground plane contains the lower store films. The triplate word drive line is made almost symmetrical by enlarging the distance between the center strip and the ground plate. A relatively thick (10-50 mu m) insulating layer of sputtered glass is inserted between store film and ground plane.
