More accurate translation of design automation input information from small card layout sheets to magnetic tape is afforded. The apparatus includes X-Y crossbar matrix panel 10, control panel 12, diode decode matrix 14, serializer 16, and keypunch 18 equipped with an auxiliary readin, readout device for punching card 20.

Matrix 10 is a two-layer printed circuit board of X and Y coordinate bars with eyelets in a pattern matching the SLT small card layout sheet. Drawing 22 is placed in registry over matrix 10. Ground seeking probe 24 is forced through drawing 22 at a desired position. This brings the corresponding pair of eyelets to approximately zero volts on six of the matrix 14 output lines corresponding to the X and Y hundreds, tens and units position of the probe.

For each type of transcription to be performed, a specific pair of program drum and auxiliary program drum cards are punched to the desired format. Any punch command from panel 10 or serializer 16 initiates a duplication operation in punch 18. Punching of data from control code switches 26, 27 and 28 and the X- Y matrix 10 is Initiated by depressing punch switch 32. Appropriate interlocking is provided such that if no data character is selected, a punch operation is inhibited.
