The oscilloscope system has an electronic switch that shifts the vertical deflection plates of the cathode ray tube alternately between two input terminals A and B to display two waveforms. In some applications, it is advantageous to display the two waveforms at different horizontal sweep rates.

This system has a horizontal sweep generator for each channel. Each sweep generator is controlled by sync signal generating circuits, not shown, to produce the selected horizontal sweep waveform. An electronic switch of the same general type as the vertical switch couples the outputs of two sweep generators to the horizontal deflection plates of the cathode ray tube.

The two electronic switches are controlled so that each input A and B is applied to the vertical deflection plates when the associated sweep generator is coupled to the horizontal deflection plates. An oscillator provides a signal to establish the rate of switching between the two inputs. This rate is about five megacycles per second or higher.

A beam select control converts the oscillator waveform to a form that is suitable for operating the electronic switches. The beam select control can also be used to provide an output for blanking the beam during switching. This system can also be made to display more than two horizontal traces by using electronic switches of the type that switch between several input terminals.
