Character Recognition Method

The method is for identifying characters, alphanumeric or otherwise, used to denote various objects such as railroad cars, boxes, crates, or the like. The method is particularly applicable in environments where ordinary characters become obliterated by dirt.

In operation, electromagnetic radiation of wavelength lambda lambda is transmitted by antenna 10 as a pencil beam. The characters are die-cut from material of one quarter lambda thickness. The material is transparent to electromagnetic radiation and is coated over with a paint that both transmits and reflects radiation of wavelength lambda. The rear surfaces of the characters are fully reflective to radiation of wavelength lambda. Therefore, since the energy reflected by the rear surface of each character is 180 degrees out of phase with the radiation reflected from the front surface of the character, cancellation of radiation in the area of the character is achieved by destructive interference.

The variations in the radiation received at receiving antenna 12 due to this wave cancellation in the area of the characters permits the characters to be recognized. Rotation of transmitting antenna 10 at a high velocity provides a fast pencil beam sweep and tends to negate the relative motion of the characters being scanned when the characters are mounted on a moving object such as, for example, a railroad car.
