Abstract

The device accurately senses data holes in a folded or damaged record card. It comprises two contact members 10 and 12. These are normally biased together by spring tension. Member 12 has bent portion 14 which is located out of the line of data holes in record card 16. Sensing member 18 is secured to member 10.

Sensing Device

The device accurately senses data holes in a folded or damaged record card. It comprises two contact members 10 and 12. These are normally biased together by spring tension. Member 12 has bent portion 14 which is located out of the line of data holes in record card 16. Sensing member 18 is secured to member 10.

Member 18 is pointed so that it drops into a hole punched in card 16 as shown in the lower left drawing. Such action closes the contacts and indicates the presence of the data to an external circuit. The upper left drawing shows the position of the sensing device with contacts open in an area of the card where no data hole is present.

In the case of a folded or damaged card, the contact prevents errors due to the irregular portion of card 16 as in the upper right drawing. Even though the data hole occurs in a folded portion of card 16 as in the lower right drawing, the contacts close to accurately sense the data.
