Abstract

The cartridge is for mounting a standard reel of magnetic tape for threading so that two areas of the tape are exposed. The cartridge is completely enclosed when lid 10 is in position. When lid 10 is turned 180 degrees, an opening is provided for access of a transducer. Standard tape reel 12 is mounted on an inner portion of hub 14. Take-up reel 15 of reduced diameter is permanently mounted on the outer portion of hub 14.

Magnetic Tape Cartridge

The cartridge is for mounting a standard reel of magnetic tape for threading so that two areas of the tape are exposed. The cartridge is completely enclosed when lid 10 is in position. When lid 10 is turned 180 degrees, an opening is provided for access of a transducer. Standard tape reel 12 is mounted on an inner portion of hub 14. Take-up reel 15 of reduced diameter is permanently mounted on the outer portion of hub 14.

The tape is threaded from reel 12 to a pair of tape guides 16 and 18. These are near the opening in the cartridge. The tape is then threaded across tilted idler roller 20 and two tape guides 22 and 24 at the level of reel 15. Thus, two sections of tape are exposed for processing through the opening of the cartridge.

In this, one exposed section 26 has the oxide surface exposed. The other exposed section 28 has the back of the tape exposed. Thus, section 28 of the tape is adapted for exposure to an erase magnet and for sensing reference marks on the tape such as end-of-tape marks, for example.
