Various types of coatings on the ferromagnetic carriers enhance the life of the developer mix. In addition, the triboelectric charge desired on the toner particles can be created by selecting the proper coating on the carriers.

These coatings can either be glass or synthetic resins. Examples of the resins are acrylic resins such as polymethylmethacrylate; epoxy resins; polyamides; polystyrene; polyurethane; cellulose acetate; vinyl acetate; silicone resins; phenolic resins such as phenol-formaldehyde; and copolymers such as vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer.
