Parallel Hot Tip Weld Head

Two welding tips 10 and 12, connected by identical low impedance parallel circuits to a source 14 of welding pulses, are used to simultaneously weld the opposite ends of thin insulated wire 16 to terminals 18 and 20.

Wire 16 is stretched between terminals 18 and 20. Tips 10 and 12 are placed against the wires. Then a welding pulse is applied to tips 10 and 12 to heat them. They first melt the insulation at each end of wire 16 and then weld the metal core of 16 to tinned terminals 18 and 20.

Once the insulation on wire 16 is melted, it is electrically connected at its ends to source 14 through tips 10 and 12. However, little or no current flows through wire 16 because tips 10 and 12 are at the same potential since they are connected in parallel by identical circuits to source 14. Therefore, wire 16 is not damaged by stray current from source 14.

During the welding operation, tips 10 and 12 are held in position by a force exerted through centrally located pivot point 22.

This arrangement causes an equal distribution of the forces between tips 10 and 12 and, therefore, helps to obtain a more satisfactory weld.
