Abstract

The mechanism effects a timed erasure of a magnetic recording media. Lead screw 1 drives magnetic head 2 laterally across magnetic belt 3 that is concurrently moved in a direction indicated by arrow 4. The combined relative motion results in a helical path on belt 3 for recording and reproducing signals.

Erase Magnet Timer

The mechanism effects a timed erasure of a magnetic recording media. Lead screw 1 drives magnetic head 2 laterally across magnetic belt 3 that is concurrently moved in a direction indicated by arrow 4. The combined relative motion results in a helical path on belt 3 for recording and reproducing signals.

When belt 3 is to be erased, latch assembly 5, including actuator 5a, is moved as indicated by arrow 6. This places elongated erase magnet 7 into contact with belt 3. Contacts 11 close to energize drive apparatus, not shown, for driving belt 3. Magnet 7 extends the full width of belt 3 and is maintained in engagement with belt 3 for at least a complete revolution of belt 3 by erase magnet latch 8.

Latch 8 has cam surface 8a that is arranged for direct engagement with lead screw shaft 9 upon movement of actuator 5. Cam surface 8a is sloped and arranged to ride on the periphery of shaft 9 as it rotates. The mechanism is arranged so that a number of revolutions of shaft 9 corresponding to a complete revolution of belt 3 is required for cam surface 8a to ride up sufficiently to disengage from shaft 9. Upon such disengagement, actuator assembly 5 is restored to the right by tension exerted by spring 10.
