This valve has a very fast opening time. It is susceptible of being made in virtually any size and is capable of switching a wide range of pressures. The principles of the valve which make this operation possible are a balanced dynamic poppet assembly arrangement and the inherent bistability of the device.

The valve actuating mechanism comprises ram control valve 10, ram 12, and barrel 14. Poppet assembly 16 is located in a housing and is adapted for linear movement in it. This assembly comprises the actual poppet 18 and inlet gate 20 having an area slightly larger than poppet 18. Balance chamber 22 is located above poppet 18 and is selectively connectable by reset valve 24 to either vent this chamber to the atmosphere or connect it to the high pressure inlet line. Return chamber 26 is located beneath poppet 18 and is selectively connectable by return valve 24 either to the atmosphere or to the high pressure inlet source. Rubber stop 28 is provided to absorb the impact of the downward thrust of the poppet assembly when the valve is open. The O-ring 30 is provided to seal off inlet plenum chamber 32 from outlet 34.

With the valve in position shown, balance chamber 22 is connected to the high pressure inlet line. Return chamber 26 is connected to the atmosphere by return valve 24.
