Image Scanning Conflict Removal

In image scanning, identification conflicts existing after a first scan can often be resolved by rescanning in a reverse direction over the first scan path.

Image 10 on support member 12 can be identified by scanning with transducer 14. That is, transducer 14 is passed over image 10 from left to right and thus photoelectrically scans image 10. Transducer 14 is then positioned as shown in phantom at 14'. Decoding and control circuitry 16 interprets the impulses generated by transducer 14 in order to identify image 10. If a possible conflict exists, i.e., if image 10 cannot be positively identified, further operation becomes necessary to complete the identification.

Rescanning image 10 with transducer 14, along the same path as the initial scan, only in a reverse direction, yields a more certain resolution of the conflicts than rescanning in other directions. Thus, transducer 14 is moved from the position shown in phantom at 14', over image 10, and back to its original position. Circuitry 16 then operates on the impulses available from transducer 14 in order to identify image 10.
