Motion Detector

This determines whether or not a paper document or web is moving when power is supplied to the transport. This permits detection of jams, feed failures, broken webs, etc., in document reading machines.

Paper web 10 is driven by transport drive 11 through cooperating feed rollers
12. As web 10 moves, aligner wheel 13 is rotated thereby. Wheel 13 functions to urge web 10 against guide 14 and also rotates slotted disk 15 through shaft 16. Disk 15 rotates between light source 17 and light sensitive element 18) Thus, when 15 rotates light is alternately admitted to and cut off from impinging upon
18. The output of 18 is connected to amplifier 19 which has its output connected to inputs of And 20 and inverter 21. The output of 21 is connected to an input of And 22.

And's 20 and 22 are conditioned whenever the transport drive is on and their outputs are connected to delays 24 and 26, respectively.

Outputs of 24 and 26 are connected to inputs of Or 27 which has its output connected to the set input of latch 28. Latch 28 has its set output connected to an indicator lamp 29. By this arrangement, if the transport drive is on and if amplifier 19 is either on or off for a period greater than the timing of delay circuits 24 and 26, respectively, latch 28 is set. With latch 28 set, indicator lamp 29 is activated. Delays 24 and 26 reset instantaneously when their inputs are brought down.
