Half Space Device for Standard Typewriter

Fractional backspacing in typewriters having a carriage controlled by a single escapement pawl is obtained by moving the carriage relative to its associated escapement rack. Fractional backspacing permits corrections requiring the crowding of letters.

Escapement rack 10 normally positions carriage 11 under the control of single pawl 12 and an advance spring, not shown. Manual lever 13 pivots stepped cam 14 against stationary follower 15 that is mounted on rack 10 through screws 16.

Cam 14 is connected through screw 17 to the carriage 11 such that interaction of the follower 15 on the cam 14 causes movement of rack 11 to the right by one quarter, one half, or three quarters of a space, as determined by movement of lever 13. Return movement of the carrier 11 is effected by spring 16 under the control of lever 13 and cam 14.
