Slag Thickness and Weight Determination

This apparatus is for the determination of slag layer thickness and weight on melts.

A sample of slag and metal is cut out by a device consisting of a thick iron tube with a thinner plate tube at one end of it. The inner surfaces of the tubes are smeared with a fluidizer, e.g., lime.

The tubes are lowered from above into the melt. The sharp edge of thin plate tube cuts slag layer and the melt rises into the lower end of thick tube. The tube should be kept in the melt long enough to solidify the melt cylinder in it. This cylinder can then be removed and examined. The thin plate tube melts during the sampling, i.e., each test uses one thin plate tube.
