Hub Expanding Device

With regard to this tape-reel hub latch, drawing A represents one entire latch assembly, while drawing B shows expandable parts used by the assembly.

The latch has steel ring 10 concentrically engaging the inner surface of rubber ring 13. Pin 11 has wedged grooves 12 that engage the ends of ring 10 to expand ring 10 and ring 13. Thus, the wedge action of pin 11 increases the effective diameter of ring 10 to bring radial pressure on ring 13 which surrounds it. Ring 13 in turn is forced against the hub of a tape reel, not shown, to obtain a latching action.

A latch can be released from the reel, not shown, by pulling pin 11 outwardly. The force of ring 13 then contracts the diameters of itself and ring 10. Since pin 11 is away from the center of the latch, it permits a plurality of latches to be placed on a single shaft. A common linking mechanism, not shown, can link pins 11 together for common operation of plural latches.
