This printed wiring board assembly, made up of two multi-ply laminates assembled on a single set of pins, has advantages over a single laminate having as many planes.

Board 10 has two external wiring planes and two internal voltage and ground distribution planes. A matrix of plated through-holes 11 provides connections between the planes. Double rows of pins 12 are fastened in selected rows of the holes. Component-carrying cards. not shown, can be plugged onto the pins while the other ends are available for discrete wiring and as probe points. Ordinarily, the internal planes are standardized. The signal wiring on the external planes is customized to provide connections for the particular cards assembled on the board. Second board 13 is identical or similar to board 10, Board 13 has external wiring planes and internal voltage and ground distribution planes connected by plated through-holes 14. Board 13 is mounted on pins 12 spaced from board 10.

The composite printed wiring board has four planes of customized printed wiring. To permit engineering changes to be made after assembly, connections to the pins are made only on the two accessible outermost planes. There are double the number of plated through-holes as there would be in a single laminate having as many planes. The pins serve to interconnect the two boards in addition to their other functions.
