Abstract

The magnetic tape tester comprises a plurality of tape drives in different environments, e. g., temperature and humidity. The tape heads are successively connected to a central classification computer unit. This senses the level of amplitude in respect to the bit in each track for a section of tape.

Magnetic Tape or Drive Performance Measurement

The magnetic tape tester comprises a plurality of tape drives in different environments, e. g., temperature and humidity. The tape heads are successively connected to a central classification computer unit. This senses the level of amplitude in respect to the bit in each track for a section of tape.

Level detectors indicate when the signal exceeds a predetermined normal threshold value by 10% increments up to 70%, for example. The levels for respective locations are recorded so that the histories of defects are compiled over a number of passes under varying environmental conditions. The computer selects the tape drives and stores the information for print-out which shows actual degradations as well as potential future defects.

Tape performance is monitored on a sample basis. One drive is analyzed while the other drives are operating off-line. The analyzing unit is thus shared. Other tape parameters such as skew or tape drive features can also be checked for performance on a sample basis.
