Dark trace tube 12 is provided with screen 10 which has mechanical property to inhibit fracture of the active surface 1? and thermal property of rapid erase time for a stored image. Envelope 16 encompass chamber 18. Brackets 20 mount screen 10 in envelope 16. There are also focus coil 22 and deflection coil 24, power and control voltage terminals 26, and electron gun 28. Electron beam 30 from gun 28 establishes the dark trace in screen 10.

Screen 10 has mica substrate 31, active surface layer 14 of KC1, and grounded conductive layer 32 of aluminum. Embedded in layer 14 are several grids 34 of conductive heater wires 36. These are obtained by vacuum deposition of planar groups of them on successive layers 38 of KC1.

Since the entire depth of the KC1 layer 14 is quite thin, there is obtained mechanical strength by the reinforcement due to wires 34. As several wires 36 are adjacent to thin regions of KC1, the entire layer 14 is heated for rapid erasure of a dark trace image in it. Wires 36 are energized via leads 40 and 42. When the material of wires 36 is transparent, each planar group 34 of them can be a continuous sheet.
